Malacañang Declares Period of National Mourning for Pope Francis’ Passing

Malacañang on Wednesday declared a period of national mourning following the death of Pope Francis, the beloved 266th Bishop of Rome. The announcement was made through Proclamation No. 871, signed by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on April 23. The mourning period is effective immediately and will continue until the pontiff’s burial on Saturday.

During this time, the national flag will be flown at half-mast on all government buildings and installations both in the Philippines and abroad. The gesture is meant to symbolize the country’s collective grief and respect for the late pontiff.

President Marcos Jr. described the passing of Pope Francis as a moment of “profound sorrow” not only for the Catholic Church but also for the Filipino people. “This nation expresses solidarity with the world as our generation mourns the passing of His Holiness, Pope Francis, with loving prayers for his eternal peace,” he said.

The President also highlighted the deep connection between Pope Francis and the Filipino faithful, particularly recalling the Pope’s Apostolic Visit to the Philippines in January 2015. During that visit, Pope Francis personally met with survivors of Typhoon Yolanda in Tacloban, offering comfort and words of hope amid widespread devastation.

“Pope Francis holds a special place in the hearts of the Filipino people,” Marcos Jr. noted, praising the pontiff’s compassion and leadership during his 12-year papacy. “He became a global symbol of humility, compassion, and peace, devoting his ministry to the care of the poor, marginalized, and vulnerable.”

Marcos Jr. also announced that he would travel to Rome to join world leaders in attending the Pope’s funeral on Saturday.

Pope Francis, who led over 1.3 billion Catholics worldwide, was widely known for his efforts in promoting social justice, interfaith dialogue, and global peace. His legacy as a spiritual leader who championed the dignity of all people continues to inspire millions.

As the Philippines observes this period of national mourning, the country joins the global community in honoring the life, faith, and mission of Pope Francis, an enduring figure of love and compassion.
