Man Uses Mount Kanlaon Ash as New Skincare in Viral Video

A video of a man from Barangay Ara-al in La Carlota City has recently gone viral online after he was seen rubbing volcanic ash from Mount Kanlaon all over his body, claiming it as a form of skincare. The video, uploaded on social media platforms on April 8, 2025, quickly gained attention for its unusual content amid the ongoing ashfall in Negros Island.

The man, whose identity has yet to be disclosed, appeared to be in a playful mood as he covered himself in the ash left by the minor eruption of Mount Kanlaon earlier that morning. Filipinos are known for their sense of humor even during difficult times, and netizens say the video reflects that unique trait.

However, local authorities were not amused. La Carlota City Mayor Dr. Rex Jalandoon issued a warning against using volcanic ash as skincare. In an interview with Aksyon Firing Line, the mayor said, “Even plants are dying and roofs are corroding because of the ash—imagine what it can do to your skin.”

Dr. Jalandoon stressed that the chemical composition of the ash, particularly its sulfur content, is unknown and potentially dangerous. He emphasized that volcanic ash can cause serious health problems such as skin irritation, eye damage, and respiratory issues.

Mount Kanlaon experienced a minor explosive eruption on the morning of April 8, releasing ash and sulfur that affected nearby areas, including La Carlota City. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) had already warned residents about the possible health risks from ashfall.

Netizens are divided over the viral video. While some found the man’s actions humorous, others expressed concern over the potential harm he could suffer from prolonged exposure to volcanic ash. Some users commented that such stunts should not be encouraged, especially during a natural disaster.

Despite the online buzz, local officials are urging the public to take health advisories seriously and avoid contact with volcanic ash. “This is no laughing matter,” Mayor Jalandoon added. “Let’s not make light of something that poses a real danger to our health.”

As of now, no reports have confirmed any medical issues related to the incident, but health officials continue to monitor the situation closely.
