MANILA, Philippines — Boxing legend Manny Pacquiao has officially climbed to the No. 1 spot in the latest World Boxing Council (WBC) welterweight rankings, following his impressive performance in his comeback fight against reigning champion Mario Barrios.

Pacquiao, who had been ranked No. 5 upon his return to professional boxing earlier this year, made his first fight back at age 46 a memorable one. On July 20, 2025, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, the Filipino icon went toe-to-toe with Barrios in a high-paced, 12-round battle that ended in a majority draw. While Barrios retained his title, many fans, boxing analysts, and even fellow fighters believed Pacquiao had done enough to win.
Despite the decision, Pacquiao’s performance earned him widespread praise. His speed, timing, and relentless aggression defied expectations for a fighter his age, proving he remains a dangerous contender in one of boxing’s most competitive divisions. The WBC’s decision to elevate him to the top contender position now places him in a prime position for another shot at the belt.
The Hall-of-Famer and only eight-division world champion in boxing history has already set his sights on his next challenge. Pacquiao revealed he plans to return to the ring in December, just ahead of his 47th birthday on December 17. Several high-profile names are being considered, including WBA welterweight champion Rolando “Rolly” Romero and knockout artist Gervonta Davis. A rematch with Barrios is also a strong possibility, given the controversy surrounding their first encounter.
After the fight, Pacquiao took a brief break from training, spending time in Positano, Italy, with his wife Jinkee before returning to the Philippines on Thursday. Speaking to reporters upon his arrival, Pacquiao expressed gratitude to fans who have supported his comeback and reiterated his hunger for another championship run.
“I came back because I still love this sport and I want to give fans great fights,” Pacquiao said. “If the WBC gives me another chance at the title, I will be ready.”
With his new ranking and renewed drive, Pacquiao’s late-career resurgence has reignited excitement among boxing fans worldwide. Whether he chooses a rematch with Barrios or another blockbuster bout, the “Pacman” has made it clear — he’s not done making history just yet.
