In celebration of Labor Day, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. announced that commuters in Metro Manila can enjoy free rides on three major railway lines—Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3), Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT-1), and Light Rail Transit Line 2 (LRT-2)—from April 30 to May 3.

The President announced on Tuesday, April 29, through a video message, saying the initiative aims to honor the invaluable contributions of Filipino workers to the country’s economy and society.
“I would like to announce to all our commuters that to give a little recognition to our workers this Labor Day celebration, I directed the MRT-3, LRT-1, and LRT-2 to offer free rides,” Marcos said.
The free rides are intended as a token of appreciation for the sacrifices and dedication of millions of laborers across the country. The President emphasized that the Labor Day holiday is not only a celebration, but also a time to reflect on the hard work and resilience of Filipino workers.
“This will run from April 30 to May 3. This is our small way of showing gratitude for their sacrifices and contributions, not only to the economy but also to our society,” he added.
This move is expected to benefit thousands of daily commuters, particularly workers who rely on the rail systems for affordable and efficient transportation. The Department of Transportation (DOTr) is tasked with coordinating the implementation of the free ride initiative to ensure smooth operations throughout the four days.
Netizens and labor groups have welcomed the announcement, describing it as a “positive gesture” towards the working class. Some, however, urged the government to also focus on long-term solutions such as wage increases and improved labor conditions.
The free ride program aligns with the government’s broader commitment to support the labor force, which remains the backbone of the Philippine economy.
