Retired Maj. Gen. Nerez brings a wealth of experience to his new role. Throughout his distinguished career in the Philippine National Police (PNP), he held various key positions, including serving as the regional director for the Cordillera Administrative Region and leading the Directorate for Integrated Police Operations in Southern Luzon. His extensive background in law enforcement and strategic operations is expected to enhance PDEA’s capabilities in combating drug-related crimes.

The appointment comes at a crucial time, as the Marcos administration continues to address the persistent challenges posed by illegal drugs. According to recent reports, under the current administration’s anti-drug campaign, PDEA has seized illegal drugs worth approximately ₱49.82 billion. This significant achievement reflects the government’s unwavering dedication to eradicating the drug menace.

Retired Maj. Gen. Nerez succeeds Moro Virgilio M. Lazo, who was appointed as PDEA chief in October 2022. Lazo, a former commander of the PNP Special Action Force, led the agency during a period marked by intensified operations against high-profile drug syndicates.

The leadership transition at PDEA is anticipated to bring renewed vigor to the agency’s initiatives. With Retired Maj. Gen. Nerez at the helm, PDEA is expected to implement strategic measures aimed at dismantling drug networks, preventing the proliferation of illegal substances, and promoting rehabilitation programs for affected individuals.

The public and various stakeholders have expressed optimism regarding this development. Many believe that Retired Maj. Gen. Nerez’s appointment will lead to more effective enforcement actions and collaborative efforts with other law enforcement agencies, community organizations, and international partners.

As the new PDEA chief assumes office, the nation looks forward to strengthened initiatives and a more resolute approach in the fight against illegal drugs, contributing to a safer and more secure Philippines.
