Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Undersecretary for Barangay Affairs Martin Diño said Friday that the interior department will not extend its deadline set on September 29 for mayors and barangay officials nationwide.
“Wala pong extension,” (No more extension) according to Martin Diño as he was quoting the directive of Eduardo Año, Interior Secretary of the DILG.
Diño told DZMM that the Office of the President has the right to suspend mayors who will disobey the instructions.
“Sabi nga ni Presidente, basta may rekomendasyon ng DILG, agad-agad aaksyunan ng Malacañang,” Diño said.
(According to the President, for as long as there is a recommendation from the Department of the Interior and Local Government, Malacañang will take immediate measures.)
According to Tess Vergara of the DILG Public Affairs Office, the DILG legal team is measuring what possible sanctions could be issued for the non-complying local chief executives (LCE).
The DILG, according to Diño, can also file complaints before the Office of the Ombudsman against barangay officials who fail to stop construction of illegal infrastructures.
Diño also mentioned that his office has sent show-cause orders to about 1,200 officials to explain their side on supposed failure to punish residents who were throwing trash on rivers and canals that flow into Manila Bay.
“Those who do so can be penalized with a P300 to P1,000 fine and community service of 1 to 15 days under the law,” Diño noted.
