The previously close relationship between the Dutertes and Senator Bong Go appears to be showing signs of strain. This development comes after Davao City Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte publicly criticized the senator for his silence on issues affecting the city.
Go’s absence has been conspicuous at the Maisug rallies and other public engagements involving former president Rodrigo Duterte. Furthermore, his lack of commentary on recent controversies surrounding Davao City has not gone unnoticed.
During a recent Hakbang ng Maisug prayer rally, Mayor Duterte expressed his frustrations directly. “Ikaw Bong Go, you are my kumpare. If I knew it would come to this, I would have not voted for you,” he declared. His comments were pointed, suggesting that Go, as a national figure, should be more vocal about the “atrocities” he perceives from the current administration. “You are in a national position; you should be saying something. It’s obvious, the atrocities that the administration is doing. You should be saying something.”
Mayor Duterte urged Go to demonstrate his commitment to the Filipino people over personal interests. “You still have time to redeem yourself. Show to us that you will stand by the Filipino people. Show your love, your love for country over your love for yourself because the people are struggling,” he said. He further implied that if Go harbors aspirations for re-election, he must align himself with the needs and sentiments of the Dabawenyos, particularly in challenging times.
In response, Senator Go acknowledged Mayor Duterte’s sentiments, emphasizing his longstanding loyalty to the Duterte family. “I understand the emotions of Mayor Baste,” Go said. He recounted his years of service under former president Rodrigo Duterte, highlighting his ongoing efforts to assist in his personal capacity. “Half of my life was spent with him and even until now, I continue to help in my personal capacity, however small, because that is my commitment to him that I will not let him down,” he explained.
Despite the criticisms, Go reiterated his commitment to public service, a principle he attributes to the teachings of former president Duterte. “I will continue to serve because this is my mandate and what I learned from former president Duterte himself. I will always put first public service, empathy, and love for others over myself,” he stated. Go affirmed his dedication to the Filipino people, expressing that his love for his countrymen surpasses personal considerations. “One thing is for sure; I love my fellow Filipino – more than myself. That is why I will continuously care for our countrymen,” he added.
The public exchange between Mayor Duterte and Senator Go underscores a potential shift in the dynamics of their relationship, raising questions about future political alliances and the implications for both their careers.
