Metro Manila To Lower Lockdown? – Roque Says It’s Not Impossible

Will Metro Manila Lower Lockdown Status?

METRO MANILA – In the previous months, Metro Manila has been placed under a general community quarantine, however, it may have a lower lockdown.

According to Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque, a council of Metro Manila mayors discussed placing the province under MGCQ. Furthermore, if the number of coronavirus cases continues to lower Metro Manila may be placed under an MGCQ by November.

During a press briefing, Roque stated that lowering the lockdown status of Manila was “not an impossibility”. He explained that the number of COVID-19 cases in the province was seeing a recent decline. Still, the spokesperson emphasized that it would be up to the residents of the province to continue following health protocols.

Pero nasa mga kababayan pa rin natin iyan sa Metro Manila. Alam na po natin ang dapat gawin: mask, hugas, iwas“, Roque said. Currently, Metro Manila holds about a tenth of the country’s 100 million population. This accounts to about 1/3 of the Philippines’ gross domestic product.

As such, lowering the lockdown in the province would equate to a huge comeback for the economy. When the MGCQ has been imposed, around 75% of the economy and businesses in the province would be allowed to reopen.

But, a clustering of COVID-19 cases and the high admission rates of COVID-19 patients caused major problems for the medical community. Among the issues were a lack of beds and isolation facilities. Due to this, Metro Manila failed to impose an MGCQ.

Meanwhile, the LGUs in the province seem hopeful that the status may finally be placed as the number of cases lower.
