MMDA Suspends Number Coding Scheme for Holiday Season

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has announced the suspension of the expanded number coding scheme during the upcoming holiday season, including Rizal Day. The suspension aims to accommodate the anticipated increase in vehicular traffic as people travel for Christmas and New Year celebrations.

In an advisory released on Wednesday, the MMDA specified the dates when the number coding scheme will not be enforced:

  • Tuesday, December 24: Christmas Eve (special non-working holiday)
  • Wednesday, December 25: Christmas Day (Regular holiday)
  • Monday, December 30: Rizal Day (Regular holiday)
  • Tuesday, December 31: Last day of the year (special non-working holiday)
  • Wednesday, January 1, 2025: New Year’s Day (Regular holiday)

The MMDA noted that the suspension is intended to provide motorists with greater mobility during one of the busiest times of the year. “The number of vehicles on the road increases due to the large number of people who will go on vacation and celebrate the Christmas season,” the agency explained in Filipino.

To ensure a smooth and safe travel experience, the MMDA advised motorists to plan their trips, strictly adhere to traffic regulations, and drive cautiously. The agency’s reminder aims to mitigate potential accidents and maintain order on the roads amid heightened travel activity.

The number coding scheme, officially known as the Unified Vehicular Volume Reduction Program (UVVRP), is designed to reduce traffic congestion by limiting the days certain vehicles can use Metro Manila’s major roads based on the last digit of their license plates. However, suspensions are often declared during holidays and special occasions to accommodate increased public mobility.

Public reaction to the suspension has been largely positive, with many commuters and motorists expressing relief over the decision. “It’s a big help for those of us visiting relatives outside Metro Manila,” said one motorist. “The roads are expected to be busier, so this gives us more flexibility.”

Traffic authorities will remain vigilant to manage the expected surge in vehicles and ensure public safety. Motorists are encouraged to stay updated on any further announcements from the MMDA regarding traffic management during the holiday season.

The agency’s proactive approach highlights its commitment to balancing road efficiency and public convenience, particularly during significant national celebrations. As the holidays draw near, travelers are reminded to exercise patience and cooperation to foster a harmonious and festive atmosphere on the roads.
