More than 600 candidates have withdrawn from the upcoming Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) in the Bicol Region. According to Maria Juana Valeza, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) Bicol Director, those who backed out include 83 aspirants for the SK chairman position, 283 for SK members, 45 for barangay chairman, and 230 for Sangguniang barangay.
Despite the significant number of withdrawals, the count of candidates aspiring for positions in the barangay and SK in the Bicol Region remains high. According to Valeza, there are still 69,105 candidates for barangay positions and 51,114 for the SK throughout the region.
Several factors may have prompted these candidates to withdraw from the election. It could be due to fear of competition, personal reasons, or issues related to their leadership abilities. Nonetheless, this situation provides an opportunity to delve into deeper issues within these elections.
One of the primary objectives of the BSKE is to have leaders in the barangay and youth sector who genuinely care for their communities. The presence of numerous candidates indicates active citizen participation in the election process. However, the withdrawal of candidates also reflects challenges and uncertainties within the electoral system.
It is essential to examine the reasons behind the candidates’ withdrawals to understand their concerns and considerations. This is an opportunity for government agencies and stakeholders to improve the election system and ensure fairness and justice.
For the remaining candidates, this is a chance to prove their capabilities and dedication to serving their communities. They should uphold the principle of “correct and honest service” to become effective leaders in the barangay and youth sector.
In conclusion, the BSKE plays a vital role in our democracy. It allows citizens to choose their leaders and have a voice in their community’s governance. It is crucial to uphold the integrity of the election and ensure that the right leaders are chosen to promote the development of our barangays and youth.
