Philippine Embassy Confirms Atty. Salvador Medialdea’s Hospitalization

The Philippine Embassy in The Hague has confirmed that Atty. Salvador Medialdea, former Executive Secretary and legal counsel to former President Rodrigo Duterte, was admitted to a local hospital on the morning of March 18, 2025, Netherlands time. Medialdea was visiting Duterte at the International Criminal Court (ICC) Detention Center when he experienced health issues that required immediate medical attention.

In a statement released by the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Philippines, the Embassy assured the public that Medialdea’s condition is being closely monitored. The Embassy stated that they are in constant communication with the medical team overseeing his care and are providing necessary consular assistance to ensure his well-being.

Medialdea has played a key role in Duterte’s defense team following the former president’s unexpected arrest on March 11, 2025. Duterte was taken into custody over charges related to his administration’s controversial anti-drug campaign. Medialdea has been outspoken about the circumstances of Duterte’s arrest, describing it as “extrajudicial rendition” and “pure and simple kidnapping” during a pre-trial hearing on March 14. He argued that Duterte was forcibly taken from the Philippines and brought to The Hague without proper legal procedures, raising concerns about political motivations behind the arrest.

Despite these allegations, the ICC has continued with the case, scheduling a confirmation of charges hearing for September 23, 2025. Duterte, who appeared via video link during initial proceedings, has maintained his position on the anti-drug campaign, taking full responsibility for its outcomes. Meanwhile, supporters of the former president have staged protests outside the ICC, calling for Duterte’s release and his return to the Philippines.

Before his hospitalization, Medialdea had been actively coordinating Duterte’s legal defense. He was granted a 15-day visa by Dutch authorities to facilitate his role as legal counsel. The Philippine Embassy also provided the necessary support, including arranging care packages and appropriate clothing for Duterte and his delegation.

The Embassy’s statement did not disclose specific details about Medialdea’s condition but assured that updates would be provided as more information becomes available. The Philippine community in the Netherlands and supporters back home have expressed concern and are hoping for his swift recovery.

This is a developing story, and further updates will be provided as new information emerges.
