Phivolcs Records More Than 600 Aftershocks Following the Luzon Earthquake with 6.1 Magnitude
PHIVOLCS – The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology explained why more than 600 aftershocks followed the 6.1 magnitude earthquake in Luzon.
Currently, the Filipino populace are watchful over the earthquake incidents. On April 22, 2019, at around 5:00 in the afternoon, a 6.1 magnitude quake hit the Central Luzon.
The people who felt the quake claimed that there was an intense shaking and many of them were worried on what to do. Undeniably, it ignited the talks about the possibility of the so-called “Big One”.
Structures were damaged and several lives, not less than eight(8), were lost because of the natural incident. The public is left in fears of what may happen next.
With regards to the aftershocks, based on a recent report on ABS-CBN News, more than 600 were recorded by Phivolcs. He explained why the number followed the 6.1 magnitude earthquake in Luzon.
Speaking to ANC, Phivolcs Executive Director Renato Solidum explained that 600+ aftershocks followed the 6.1 magnitude Luzon earthquake as the ground is still adjusting to the movement of the fault.
“When a fault moves, it will not totally stop moving. The ground around it will still adjust. That’s why we have aftershocks,” Solidum expressed.
Based on the article, Solidum added that, in time, the aftershocks will decrease in number and there will be far spacing in between two aftershocks.
According to the Phivolcs Executive Director, the 100-Kilometer West Valley Fault moves every 400-600 years and, in 1648, it ignited an earthquake with a magnitude between 6.3 to 6.5.
“Please don’t panic. Be calm during an event. What is important is understand the scenario,” he said.
