The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS-DOST) has issued a warning to nine barangays in La Castellana, Negros Occidental, regarding the potential danger of pyroclastic flows from Kanlaon Volcano. The advisory follows heightened volcanic activity that may lead to an eruption.
The affected barangays include Sag-ng, Camandag, Manlalangoy, Manghanoy, Cabacungan, Puso, Biak-na-Bato, Masulong, and Cabagna-an. Additionally, Brgy. Robles, located in the poblacion proper, has been designated as a buffer zone. Residents in these areas are urged to remain vigilant and prepared for potential hazards.
Kanlaon Volcano, one of the most active volcanoes in the Philippines, has shown signs of increased activity in recent days. PHIVOLCS has maintained an Alert Level 3 status, indicating relatively high unrest and the possibility of hazardous eruptions. The agency has cautioned that if volcanic activity escalates further, the alert level may be raised to Alert Level 4, signifying an imminent eruption.
Pyroclastic flows, which consist of hot gases, ash, and volcanic rock, can travel at high speeds and pose a significant threat to life and property. These flows can cause widespread destruction, particularly in areas near the volcano’s slopes.
PHIVOLCS has advised residents to closely monitor updates and follow the guidance of local authorities. Evacuation plans are being prepared in case the situation worsens. The agency has also reminded the public to refrain from entering the 4-kilometer permanent danger zone (PDZ) around Kanlaon Volcano to ensure their safety.
The local government of La Castellana has mobilized resources and coordinated with disaster response teams to address the potential threat. Emergency shelters and evacuation sites have been identified, and essential supplies are being readied for affected communities.
Kanlaon Volcano last erupted in 2016, causing ashfall in surrounding areas. With its current activity, PHIVOLCS emphasizes the importance of preparedness and adherence to safety protocols to safeguard lives and property.
Residents are encouraged to stay tuned to official announcements and updates from PHIVOLCS and local government units to stay informed about the evolving situation.
