The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) issued a warning on Tuesday regarding a potential eruption at Kanlaon Volcano, located on Negros Island, following a series of volcanic earthquakes. The volcano is now under Alert Level 2, indicating increased volcanic unrest that may lead to further escalation.
PHIVOLCS chief Teresito Bacolcol, in an interview with GMA Integrated News’ Unang Balita, stated that the situation is being closely monitored. “Kanlaon is now on Alert Level 2. This means that the activity can escalate further. Yes, it may erupt again,” Bacolcol explained.
Due to the heightened activity, PHIVOLCS has advised nearby residents and local government units to remain vigilant. Precautionary measures are encouraged to ensure the safety of the population residing near the volcano, which is known for its history of eruptions.
PHIVOLCS released an updated bulletin on Tuesday, reporting that 37 volcanic earthquakes had been recorded at Kanlaon from midnight on Monday to midnight on Tuesday. These quakes, which signal potential magma movement beneath the volcano, raise concerns about a possible eruption.
In response to the ongoing volcanic activity, some schools in La Castellana, Negros Occidental, suspended classes on Tuesday as a precautionary measure. The local government is taking proactive steps to prepare for any further escalation of the situation.
Residents living within the 4-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) are strongly advised against entering the area due to the risk of explosions, rockfalls, and landslides that can occur without warning. PHIVOLCS also reminded aviation authorities to avoid flying close to the summit due to the possibility of ash plumes that may affect aircraft operations.
Kanlaon Volcano, which is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, is one of the most active volcanoes in the Philippines. Its last eruption occurred in March 2017. Since then, it has remained under close observation, and its current state of activity has prompted a renewed focus on preparedness in the surrounding communities.
PHIVOLCS continues to monitor Kanlaon and urges the public to stay updated on official advisories and bulletins. The institute is also coordinating with local authorities to ensure a swift response if the situation escalates further.
