In the month of October, Bacolod City celebrates its vibrant and joyous MassKara Festival. The MassKara Festival (Hiligaynon: Pista sang MassKara, Filipino: Pista ng MassKara) is an annual celebration held every fourth Sunday of October in Bacolod, Philippines. The festival’s main locations include the Bacolod Public Plaza, Lacson Tourism Strip, and Bacolod City Government Center, and it began on October 19, 1980.
This is a colorful celebration that spans two days of street dancing, with two categories: barangay category and open category. The costumes are incredibly colorful, and, of course, participants wear colorful MassKara masks, which are considered the symbol of the festival. There is also the Electric MassKara, where people dress in colorful attire with Masskara masks and neon lights. This takes place on one of Bacolod City’s main roads, Lacson Street.
There are contests for creating the most beautiful Masskara masks, and they also choose a “Miss MassKara” for the Festival. There are many other activities during the festival, including performances by various artists in different locations across Bacolod City.
