PISTON Group Protests PUV Modernization: Transport Strike on December 14-15, 2023

Despite promises of progress and modernization in the country’s public transportation system, the PISTON Group continues to vehemently oppose the PUV Modernization Program. As a demonstration of their dissent, the group announced a new transport strike scheduled for December 14-15, 2023.

The PUV Modernization Program, endorsed by the government, aims to improve the state of public transportation by replacing old jeepneys with more modern units that boast higher safety standards and environmental efficiency. However, despite these objectives, PISTON’s national opposition to the program remains steadfast.

The primary reason for PISTON’s objection lies in the incapacity of small operators to afford the financial burden of purchasing new units. A significant portion of their earnings goes towards boundaries, and a considerable portion is spent on fuel and other operational expenses. This situation places them at risk of losing their livelihoods and businesses.

Additionally, PISTON emphasizes the limited time frame and the imposition of a consolidation deadline on December 31, 2023. Setting this deadline raises concerns among operators and drivers, fearing the loss of their livelihoods if they fail to comply with the requirements before the year’s end.

The process of auditing and approving the new vehicles is also not exempt from criticism. Reports describe a lack of certainty and insufficient information, raising concerns about the safety and readiness of the new units entering the streets. The group conducted consultations with its members before deciding on the upcoming transport strike. This reflects their collective decision and unity in advocating for their rights and livelihoods.

As the date of the transport strike approaches, PISTON calls on the government to listen to their grievances and implement more just and humane solutions for small operators and drivers. The group also appeals to the public to understand and support their advocacy for higher safety standards, justice, and livelihood in public transportation in the country.
