PNP Headquarters Sends Team to Investigate Mayor Espinosa’s Death

Three PNP officials were sent as team to Leyte to probe the killing of Mayor Rolando Espinosa.

The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group of the Philippine National Police sent a team to the province of Leyte to probe the death of Albuera, Leyte Mayor Rolando Espinosa Sr. inside the detention facility.

Espinosa was killed on Saturday morning during the shootout that happened when the CIDG served the search warrant.

The team is composed of three members and they were sent to Leyte on Sunday.

According to PNP spokesperson Dionardo Carlos, the investigation team is composed of Senior Superintendent Ramon Rafael, Atty. Virgilio Pablico of the CIDG legal division, and Senior Police Officer 1 Rudy Gahar.

PNP Chief Director General Ronald Dela Rosa has ordered PNP-CIDG Director Roel Obusan to take charge of the probe. This is even dela Rosa was in Las Vegas, USA to watch Senator Manny Pacquiao’s fight against Jessie Vargas.

Dela Rosa will get back in the country on Monday, November 7 and he said he will personally deal with the police personnel involved in the killing of the detained mayor.

“I will take care of them once I come back tomorrow, deal with them right after the bout,” Dela Rosa said.

The PNP Chief assured to give the impartial conduct of investigation and said there will be no whitewash for anyone involved in the incident.

This was the comment of dela Rosa following the statement of Senator Panfilo Lacson who expressed doubt on the CIDG personnel’s claim that they killed Espinosa in self-defense after he fired first.

“I am assuring the good senator that there will be no whitewash, there will be no cover-up,” he said.

Dela Rosa also said he will look over reports implicating CIDG-Eastern Visayas Director Marvin Marcos as a drug protector. There are also reports that the CIDG operatives took the CCTV footage in the detention facility in Baybay City Sub-Provincial Jail to hide the circumstances of the November 5 incident.

The Commission on Human Rights and the National Bureau of Investigation earlie said they will conduct parallel investigations on the mayor’s death.
