Rody Duterte has denied that he will put Jejomar Binay to jail if elected.
Presidential frontrunner Rodrigo “Rody” Duterte denied that he will put Vice President Jejomar Binay to jail if he will be elected as the president. He said that he will let the court decide about the matter.
In an interview with Philstar, the Davao City Mayor said that he want the court decide on the cases filed against him. This is in relation to the alleged misuse of funds when Binay was still the mayor of Makati City.
Asked if Binay will be put to jail if he becomes the next president, Duterte simply answered: “Let the justice take its course.”
Although Duterte said it, PDP-Laban president senator Koko Pimentel III previously said that Binay is likely the first politician to be sent in jail after the Office of Ombudsman filed a plunder case against him.
Duterte’s running mate Vice Presidential bet Senator Alan Cayetano also said that Binay has big chance to be imprisoned since the Ombudsan will continue to pursue the case against him.
Duterte earlier said that Binay and his family members will go to jail if he fails in the election. “If he doesn’t win the election, he and many members of his family will go to jail,” he said according to CNN Philippines.
Son of Binay, Junjun and his wife Dr. Elenita Binay, who both served as the mayor of Makati City, are also facing corruption cases.
Sandiganbayan has filed graft charges to Junjun over the alleged overpricing of Makati Parking Building, while Dr. Elinita is facing charges for the alleged anomalous purchase of hospital equipment for the City.
