Duterte To Make Lapu-Lapu A Formal Hero

The presumptive President Rodrigo Duterte said that he wanted to correct the “injustice” of how the Filipinos see Cebu’s Lapu-Lapu, by giving the late strongman the recognition of a real hero formally.

In a report in GMA News, Duterte told in an interview that Lapu-Lapu will be recognized as a real hero because he was the first to fight the Spaniards upon landing to Cebu more than 300 years ago.

This is because, according to Duterte, the Datu has been just remembered by many Filipinos as a mere kind fish than the great Datu who faces the Spaniards.

“I will raise to level to the stature of a hero si Lapu-Lapu. He was the first native who fought and even ki1led the imperialists, si [Ferdinand] Magellan. To honor his feat,” he said as quoted it the article.

“Lapu-Lapu should be given the highest honor. Siya ang unang nakipagbakbakan eh kasi ginawa lang nila si Lapu-Lapu na isda and I do not like it,” he added.

According to the report, Duterte has been reminding the people about how the Datu fought for freedom back in the days.

“It is now time to recognize the people who did something to our native land. [He] was one of them,” he said.

Duterte also said that he would just leave the details regarding hero’s recognition in the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NCHP).

The incoming President also added that he would rename the “Lapu-Lapu fish” to “Magellan”.
