Mayor Rodrigo Duterte to return excess campaign funds to donors.
Presumptive president Rodrigo Duterte will return the excess campaign funds given by his anonymous donors, according to his campaign team leader Marion Raagas.
Yesterday, Raagas took the Facebook to photo of checks which represent the excess funds for the campaign. He said that the checks will be returned to the outgoing Davao City Mayor’s sponsors whom he refused to name.
Raagas said that this might the first time in Philippine history that a politician will give back the remaining funds to the contributors.
“I suppose this is the first time in our country’s history that excess campaign funds are voluntarily returned to generous campaign contributors,” he wrote in the caption.
According to Raagas, politicians would usually keep the money or split it among the members of campaign team.
Furthermore, he noted that Duterte has refused to accept contributions from politicians suspected with corrupt practices despite of the amount.
“It is also interesting to note that Mayor Duterte himself has repeatedly turned down financial contributions (regardless of amount) if fund contributor is identified to have corrupt practices or have questionable integrity,” he added.
Duterte will assume the presidency on June 30. In his recent interview, the outgoing Mayor said that he only wants a simple inauguration and he wants to take the oath alone.
Duterte also previously said that he will not live in Malacañang Palace because of apparent paranormal activities and ghost sightings inside the presidential residence.
