Trillanes, Guilty Of Contempt On Bribery Cases, Says CA
The Court of Appeals (CA) recently found Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV guilty of indirect contempt on allegations that the magistrates were bribed for the dismissal of Makati Mayor Junjun Binay.
In a report by GMA News, Sen. Trillanes was fined P30,000 which is payable within 10 days from the day of the decision.
According to the 15-page decision by the CA, the senator failed to show that he was a senator when he accused the Associate Justices Francisco Acosta and Jose Reyes Jr. of receiving a huge amount of P25 million each as bribe to restrain the preventive suspension of Binay.
The CA said that the accusations given by Trillanes were “malicious, baseless, and unsubstained,” and that his position is not enough “exculpate him from liability.”
The Court added that the Senator failed to support his claims by not presenting evidence and by just relying on unsupported and independent statements.
“He cannot escape liability for making an attack on the integrity and credibility of the justices of the Court of Appeals which tend to degrade the dignity of this Court and erode public confidence that should be accorded to it,” as the decision reads quoted in the article.
The CA pointed out that Trillanes cannot invoke his parliamentary immunity and doctrine of his communication as his efence. The CA added that Trillanes is not above the law.
The CA also said that Sen. Trillanes’ move to allow the Senate to investigate the alleged bribery accusations were just afterthought to explain his claims.
According to Trillanes, he will be appealing to the Supreme Court.
