Pope Francis, 88, has been diagnosed with bilateral pneumonia while undergoing treatment at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, the Vatican announced Tuesday. Despite his condition, the pontiff remains in good spirits and is grateful for the widespread prayers and support from the faithful.

According to a statement from the Holy See, laboratory tests and a chest X-ray revealed a complex medical situation. The Pope was initially admitted last Friday due to bronchitis, but doctors later detected a polymicrobial infection, worsening his respiratory issues. A CT scan conducted on Tuesday confirmed the onset of pneumonia in both lungs, requiring additional medication.
Pope Francis has a history of respiratory complications. At age 21, he underwent surgery to remove part of his right lung due to pleurisy. Over the years, he has also faced other health challenges, including colon and hernia surgeries in 2021. More recently, he has been seen using a wheelchair due to knee pain.
In response to his worsening health, the Vatican has canceled all of the Pope’s scheduled engagements, including a papal audience on Saturday and the Sunday Mass. It remains uncertain whether he will be able to lead the weekly Angelus prayer. Despite his hospitalization, Pope Francis continues to spend his time praying, reading, and resting, according to Vatican sources.
News of the Pope’s illness has sparked a wave of support from around the world. Many faithful have gathered at Saint Peter’s Square and outside Gemelli Hospital, lighting candles and offering prayers for his recovery.
“I hope that he’s getting better soon,” said Birgit Jungreuthmayer, a 48-year-old tourist from Austria visiting Vatican City.
Similarly, Bolivian resident Jacqueline Troncoso shared her devotion, saying, “I came to say a prayer for the Pope so that he may recover soon. I send him my best wishes.”
The Vatican has also received numerous heartfelt messages, including drawings from children in the hospital dedicated to Pope Francis. Parents of sick children have also written letters asking for his prayers.
As the leader of the Catholic Church since 2013, Pope Francis has remained a global symbol of humility and compassion. His health struggles have touched many, prompting an outpouring of prayers and well-wishes from around the world. The Vatican continues to monitor his condition and will provide updates as needed.
