Sara Duterte Calls for Faith and Unity During Holy Week

Vice President Sara Duterte called on the Filipino people to hold on to their faith and emulate the life of Jesus Christ, as she delivered her Holy Week message amid what she described as a time of “heavy trials and growing division.”

In her official statement for Holy Monday, Duterte emphasized that Lent should be viewed not just as a religious observance, but as a time for deep reflection on Christ’s sacrifice. She underscored its relevance in the face of the country’s current struggles.

“As our nation goes through immense trials and growing division, Lent is a call to a season of healing, repentance, and remembering the values we, Filipinos, hold dear: compassion, faith, and unity,” she said, speaking in Filipino.

The Vice President highlighted that Jesus Christ’s life and teachings serve as a guide for Filipinos to remain strong and united. She urged citizens to not only honor the Lord’s sacrifice but also to reflect it in their own lives by fostering strong, compassionate communities.

“Let us have faith. Let us unite. We will overcome the darkness. God save the Philippines,” she added in English.

Duterte did not provide specifics on what particular hardships or divisions she was referring to. However, her message comes against the backdrop of a deepening political rift between her family and President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s administration. The tension, which has been playing out publicly, has sparked speculation about Duterte’s political future and her relationship with the current government.

While the vice president steered clear of overtly political language in her Holy Week statement, her call for unity and faith appeared to be a subtle appeal for national healing and solidarity during uncertain times.

Many supporters praised Duterte’s spiritual tone, saying it echoed the sentiments of a nation longing for peace amid political noise. Critics, however, interpreted the message as a veiled criticism of the administration.

As Filipinos observe Holy Week, Duterte’s message resonated with many who are seeking hope and guidance. In a country deeply rooted in Catholic faith, her call to follow the example of Christ carries a weight that transcends politics—at least for now.
