Vice President Sara Duterte has credited President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. for helping mend her relationship with her father, former President Rodrigo Duterte, who is currently detained at Scheveningen Prison in The Hague.

“This really is ironic, but I have to thank Bongbong Marcos because there was forgiveness between me and [former President Duterte] for all that has happened in our lives,” Sara Duterte told reporters following her recent visit to her father.
Father-Daughter Relationship Rekindled
The former president is currently facing trial before the International Criminal Court (ICC) for alleged crimes against humanity related to his controversial war on drugs. Despite earlier statements from the Marcos administration rejecting cooperation with the ICC, Duterte was arrested and is now awaiting trial.
During her visit, which lasted nearly three hours—the longest since her father’s initial ICC appearance on March 14—Sara Duterte shared that their conversations now focus solely on personal matters.
“We have that relationship now—a father-daughter relationship—since we cannot discuss anything legal anymore because it is understood inside that only the lawyers can discuss legal matters with the former president,” she explained.
Cherishing Time Together Despite Detention
Reflecting on their time together, Sara expressed gratitude for the newfound bond, despite the circumstances of their reunion.
“We only discuss family [matters], and this has been one of the longest meetings I have had with the former president. Growing up, he was always busy with work, he was always busy with the country,” she shared.
The vice president also acknowledged the bittersweet nature of their meetings, emphasizing that while their reconciliation is a positive outcome, it is unfortunate that it had to happen under these conditions.
“And now, I have this every day with him—talking about life, talking about family. And for that, I feel like I am blessed. Because at this point, he’s already 80 and he’s already retired,” she added.
However, she also hinted at the possibility of her father returning to politics. “But going back as mayor, baka ma-busy na naman siya sa kanyang trabaho. So, [nabigyan] kami ng ganitong time na makapag-usap as a father and daughter. [It’s] sad lang that it has to happen inside the detention. There is a good side. But, yes, thank you [kay President Marcos].”
The visit underscores the evolving political and personal dynamics between the Dutertes and the Marcos administration, revealing how even the most unexpected circumstances can lead to reconciliation.
