Sen. Robin Padilla Open to 2028 Vice Presidential Run if Duterte Asks

Senator Robin Padilla has signaled openness to running for vice president in the 2028 elections, but only under one condition: if former President Rodrigo Duterte personally asks him to do so. Speaking at a press conference, Padilla emphasized that Duterte remains the only figure who could persuade him to pursue the country’s second-highest post, recalling that it was the elder Duterte who encouraged him to enter politics and eventually become a senator.

Padilla admitted that politics was never his personal ambition, stressing that his involvement has always been tied to Duterte’s influence. “If it’s Digong’s order, I will follow. No one else can give me orders,” he said, underscoring his loyalty to the former president.

Readiness for Higher Office

When asked if he is prepared for the vice presidency, Padilla responded confidently: “We were born ready.” He described the role as largely focused on advocacy work, likening it to being a “spare tire” that he believes he can handle. Despite this, he acknowledged the existence of a hierarchy among Duterte allies who may be prioritized as running mates.

Padilla named Sen. Imee Marcos, Sen. Alan Cayetano, Sen. Bong Go, and Sen. Bato dela Rosa as senior figures who could be considered ahead of him. He admitted that his relatively new status in politics places him lower in the pecking order of Duterte loyalists.

Support for Sara Duterte

Vice President Sara Duterte has already announced her intention to run for president in 2028, though she has yet to reveal her choice of running mate. Padilla reiterated his unwavering support for her candidacy, stating that his family has long backed the Dutertes even before they entered public office.

He also expressed resilience against political attacks, noting that he has already faced criticism over his past and personal life. “There’s nothing left that can be thrown at me,” he said, adding that he is not thin-skinned and is prepared to endure the challenges of a campaign if he decides to run.

Commitment to the Duterte Camp

Padilla clarified that if he ultimately chooses not to run, he will still play an active role in the 2028 campaign. “Whoever is chosen, I will help 100 percent,” he vowed, reaffirming his loyalty to the Duterte camp.

His statements highlight both his readiness and reluctance toward higher office, balancing personal hesitation with political loyalty. Whether he becomes Sara Duterte’s running mate or not, Padilla’s role in the 2028 elections appears set to be significant.
