Two consecutive strong earthquakes struck the areas of Lingig, Surigao Del Sur, and Baganga, Davao Oriental, on Saturday, August 3, 2024. The first tremor occurred at approximately 6:23 AM, followed by the second quake 22 minutes later at around 6:45 AM.
The first earthquake registered a magnitude of 6.5 with its epicenter located at latitude 08.11°N and longitude 127.02°E, about 67 kilometers northeast of Lingig, Surigao Del Sur. Reports indicate that this quake had a depth of 10 kilometers and was caused by tectonic activity. The strong shaking was felt in various parts of Mindanao, particularly in areas near the epicenter.
Meanwhile, the second earthquake had a magnitude of 5.0 with its epicenter at latitude 07.97°N and longitude 127.28°E, approximately 90 kilometers northeast of Baganga, Davao Oriental. Similar to the first quake, this tremor also had a depth of 10 kilometers and was caused by tectonic activity. Although weaker in magnitude compared to the first quake, the shaking was still felt in nearby areas.
According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), no tsunami is expected following the two tremors. They continue to conduct monitoring and assessment to determine the extent of damage and possible aftershocks. Residents are advised to remain calm but stay prepared for any potential aftershocks. Local governments have also been urged to provide immediate response and support to affected communities.
Currently, no major damage or casualties have been reported as a result of the earthquakes. However, emergency response teams have been alerted to conduct inspections of infrastructure and buildings. Residents are encouraged to take precautionary measures and follow advisories from authorities.
These consecutive tremors serve as a reminder of the importance of earthquake preparedness, especially in areas prone to seismic activity. Having an earthquake preparedness plan, participating in drills, and knowing the proper actions to take during an earthquake are crucial to prevent significant damage and loss of life.
PHIVOLCS and local governments will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available regarding the effects of the earthquakes.
