On Tuesday afternoon, December 19, 2023, the province of Surigao del Sur was once again shaken by a magnitude 4.7 earthquake, according to the report from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
According to Phivolcs data, this natural calamity occurred as tectonic plates collided around 3:16 in the afternoon. It is noteworthy that this event seemed to originate from beneath the Earth’s surface, a type of earthquake known as a “tectonic earthquake.”
The earthquake’s center, or epicenter, was found to be 28 kilometers southeast of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur, with a depth of 33 kilometers below the surface. This caused fear and concern among residents, especially those in areas near the epicenter.
Phivolcs considers this event to be an aftershock from the stronger magnitude 7.4 earthquake that occurred off the coast of Surigao del Sur on December 2, 2023. Aftershocks are a common occurrence after a significant earthquake, resulting in small tremors in the following days or weeks.
Despite some apprehension among residents, Phivolcs clarified that they do not expect any further aftershocks from this recent earthquake. Nevertheless, authorities continue to monitor the situation and issue warnings to the public to be prepared for any possible developments.
Amid this event, Phivolcs emphasized that they did not anticipate significant damage from this earthquake. Currently, the cooperation of the local government and residents in adhering to safety protocols is expected to ensure everyone’s safety.
In conclusion, this incident serves as a reminder of the importance of preparedness and having contingency plans in such situations to maintain the safety and order of the community.
