Robredo: Suspension Of Habeas Corpus Is Not Necessary For Fighting Lawlessness
On Monday (November 14, 2016), Vice-President Leni Robredo said that the suspension of habeas corpus is not necessary for fighting lawlessness.
Robredo said in an interview that habeas corpus is stated as one of the options on the 1987 constitution. She also said that there are parameters upon declaring a habeas corpus; the invasion and rebellion can be a valid reason for declaration when public safety requires.
The vice president said that lawlessness and illegal drugs were not a valid reason for declaring habeas corpus, it does not belong to the grounds given by the constitution because it could only when it is really necessary.
Leni said that she has previously discussed the constitutional ground on which it could be declared. She also said that as of now, there’s no current situation that needs a declaration of ‘habeas corpus’.
