A devastating earthquake struck Taiwan on Wednesday, claiming the lives of at least seven individuals and leaving more than 700 injured. This powerful quake, the strongest to hit the island in 25 years, rattled buildings and triggered tsunami warnings as far as Japan and the Philippines.
The earthquake, with a magnitude of 7.4, struck at approximately 8:00 am local time, its epicenter located 18 kilometers south of Hualien City. The shallow depth of the quake, combined with its proximity to land, amplified its impact across Taiwan and nearby offshore islands.
Wu Chien-fu, director of Taipei’s Central Weather Administration’s Seismology Center, emphasized the widespread nature of the tremors, cautioning that further aftershocks could be expected in the coming days. Despite the intensity of the quake, Taiwan’s adherence to strict building regulations and a culture of disaster preparedness likely mitigated what could have been a more catastrophic event.
Tragically, the earthquake claimed lives in various circumstances. Seven individuals, including hikers and motorists, were killed by falling boulders and debris. Hualien county bore the brunt of the casualties, with 736 reported injuries and a significant toll on infrastructure.
Eyewitnesses described the terrifying moments as buildings swayed violently and objects toppled. Images circulated on social media depicted the aftermath, with multi-story structures leaning precariously and warehouses reduced to rubble. Rescue efforts were swiftly initiated, with over 50 survivors already pulled from collapsed buildings.
The impact of the earthquake extended beyond immediate casualties. Landslides cut off access to Hualien, complicating rescue operations. President-elect Lai Ching-te stressed the urgency of reaching trapped individuals, emphasizing the need for swift and coordinated action. President Tsai Ing-wen pledged full government support, mobilizing both civilian and military resources to aid affected areas.
