Many were surprised and alarmed when the renowned drag artist Amadeus Fernando Pagente, better known as Pura Luka Vega, was arrested at his residence in Sta. Cruz, Manila, on October 4, 2023, by the Manila Police District (MPD).
Vega is currently facing serious charges for violating Article 201 of the Revised Penal Code, titled “Immoral Doctrines, Obscene Publication, and Exhibition, as well as indecent shows,” in connection with Republic Act 10175, more commonly known as the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012. These allegations stem from a video in which Vega performed a remix of the Lord’s Prayer while wearing an outfit inspired by the Black Nazarene.
This isn’t the first time Vega has courted controversy. In the past, he had been declared persona non grata in some places due to performances that some considered “blasphemous” or contrary to religious beliefs. Many individuals expressed their dismay and concern about this.
Currently, Pura Luka Vega’s case continues to be closely monitored and awaited by many. It has sparked a profound discussion about freedom of expression, religious sensitivity, and the boundaries of art and culture in the country.
