Bacolod City was named as the Top Philippine Model City of 2019 during the 3rd The Manila Times Philippine Model Cities and Municipalities Awards held at New World Manila Bay Hotel, Malate Manila last Wednesday, September 25.
Bacolod City, also known as the City of Smiles, won for garnering the highest points across all categories and besting 37 competing cities in the Philippines. The city also won the Business Friendly/High Returns Award and also the Retirement Haven Award.
Evelio Leonardia, the city mayor of Bacolod, received the awards together with other officials.
According to Leonardia, he attended the event without having a prepared speech compared to last year when he and his team came all prepared, yet the city did not win. He also thanked The Manila Times for the city’s recognition, saying the distinction that the city got in 2017 hiked business investments in Bacolod by 31%.
Other local government units also bagged awards during the event.
Aside from having Bacolod City as the Top Philippine Model City of 2019, Liloan, Cebu was named as the Top Philippine Model Municipality during the event. Mayor Christina Frasco led her team in accepting the award.
With the theme “Building Better Landscapes for the Next Generation“, the event focused on the local government units’ “respective comprehensive development plan for the next three years.“
According to The Manila Times, “social development, economic growth, and environmental protection remain as the fulcrum in assessing this year’s model towns and cities.“
