US Secretary of State John Kerry now in Manila.
US Secretary of State John Kerry has arrived in the country on Tuesday evening, July 26, 2016 as confirmed by Charles Jose, spokesperson and assistant secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA).
Based upon the report of ABS-CBN News, the US secretary will meet DFA Secretary Perfecto Yasay and President Rodrigo Duterte on Wednesday, July 27, 2016.
Deputy State Department spokesperson Mark Toner said in a previous interview that Kerry, Yasay and Duterte will discuss “bilateral cooperation” under Duterte administration.
Earlier, Malacañang stated that his visit to the country which as the final leg of his ASEAN visit, seeks to strengthen ties between US and Philippines.
The Office of Presidential Communications dubbed Kerry’s meeting with Duterte as “a bid to strengthen ties anew with the US.”
US State Secretary John Kerry is the most prominent persona to meet with Duterte since he assumed presidency last June 30, 2016.
The Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) which is based in Hague recently invalidated the expansive claim of China regarding the disputed South China Sea.
Although it does not take side on the dispute of South China Sea, US earlier stated that rule of law must be served.
