VP Duterte Wants “Bloodbath” in Senate Impeachment Trial

Vice President Sara Duterte has publicly expressed her desire for a full and intense impeachment trial in the Senate, as proceedings against her continue to unfold.

In a media interview held Saturday, May 17, 2025, the embattled Vice President addressed the status of her legal preparations, emphasizing her eagerness to face the charges head-on. Duterte remarked, “Lawyers, okay naman sila, in full throttle yung kanilang preparations sa impeachment. And, of course, they do not want a trial. As lawyers, alam naman natin ang galawan ng mga abugado. Madami silang paraan sa batas as a legal recourse for their clients.”

Despite the efforts of her legal team to avoid a full trial through procedural avenues, Duterte was firm in her stance. “Sinabihan ko na rin talaga sila. I truly want a trial because I want a bloodbath talaga,” she added, indicating that she welcomes a fierce and public legal battle.

The Vice President’s combative statement comes months after the House of Representatives voted to impeach her in February 2025, with 215 lawmakers supporting the resolution. The impeachment proceedings were spearheaded by Ilocos Norte 1st District Representative Sandro Marcos and followed a wave of impeachment complaints filed against Duterte in December 2024.

Among the key allegations cited in the impeachment complaint are alleged misuse of confidential funds, abuse of power, and undermining constitutional bodies. Duterte has denied all charges.

The Senate, under the leadership of Senate President Chiz Escudero, is expected to begin formal impeachment trial proceedings shortly after President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. delivers his State of the Nation Address (SONA) in July. According to Escudero, the Senate has already begun logistical and legal preparations to ensure a fair and transparent process.

Analysts see Duterte’s bold statements as a strategic move to portray confidence and strength, rallying her political base ahead of what could be one of the most politically charged trials in recent Philippine history.

With the eyes of the nation on the impending Senate trial, the coming months are set to test both the resilience of the country’s democratic institutions and the political future of the Vice President.
