ONE Championship welterweight champ Ben Askren donated some of the prize money to a charity in the Philippines.
According to a report in GMA News Online, Askren’s opponent Nikolay Aleksakhin had to give the 20 percent of his purse money to Askren. This is because the Russian Aleksakhin failed in the weigh-in to compete for the welterweight championship bout on Friday.
What the MMA (mixed martial arts) champion did is to give some part of the money to a charity in the Philippines.
“My opponent has missed making weight so standard procedure for that is it’s going to be a non-title fight but then he also has to give up 20% of his purse,” said Askren as quoted in the article.
“I didn’t feel like it is the money I earned so I’m giving all of it to Children’s Hour which is a great charity,” Askren added.
Just like what Askren said, the rules made it to a non-title fight held at the Mall of Asia Arena for the ONE Championship: Global Rivals. Askren wins over his Russian opponent.
In an added statement, the American MMA champion said that giving back to the community is important. He also said that he feels good about giving to the charity he’s chosen and he believes that they will use it in good things.
Ben Askren was an American wrestler who became a part of the U.S. Olympic team. He is known in the world of mixed martial arts for his wrestling skills. He is now signed in for ONE Championship.
