Kawhi Leonard, Back-to-Back Kia NBA Defensive Player Of The Year
Kawhi Leonard of the San Antonio Spurs was named again as the 2015-16 Kia NBA Defensive Player of the Year.
Just like Dennis Rodman, Leonard was a non-center player who received the said honor.
He became a big help for his Spurs team to be on the NBA’s top defense this 2015-16 season.
According to ESPN, ‘The Claw’ was given 547 points and 84 first-place votes coming from the 130 sportswriters and broadcasters in the U.S. and Canada.
Golden State Warriors’ Draymond Green fell in the second place while Hassan Whiteside of the Miami Heat is next to him in the third place.
With all these awards and achievements, Kawhi Leonard remained soft spoken and gave credit to all his teammates with this recent award.
“I just hide behind (his teammates) in the game, really,” Leonard said as quoted by Inquirer.
“They give me the confidence to pressure my man and get into the ball handler. The bigs are there on the help side if the guy goes by me and I’m able to switch to other offensive players and all the other guards on my team to guard the best offensive player,” he added.
But, Coach Gregg Popovich has something else for the ‘Claw’.
Coach Pop described Leonard as a team-oriented guy and he does what he does even if his teammates are there for him or not.
Coach Pop also added that Kawhi Leonard has been giving credits to everyone. He also described Leonard as a ‘wonderful young man’.
In Coach Pop’s statement, he said what amazes him is that Leonard does his defense on both ends of the floor making him a ‘pretty special guy’.
The Spurs is one its way to the NBA Western Conference and probably to the Finals.
