Rio 2016: Olympic Flame To Be Lit On April 21 In Ancient Olympia

The Olympic Flame for the Olympic Torch Relay of the Rio 2016 is set to be lit on April 21, 2016, at the Ancient Olympia in Greece according to officials.

This is according to the Greek Olympic Committee president Spyros Capralos and Olympic Torch Relay Commission chairman Giannis Karras during a press conference.

During the event, there will be actors wearing Greek costume will authorize Apollo in the ruins of the ancient Temple of Hera in Olympia. The actors are said to be using a symbolic mirror to reflect the rays of the sun and start a flame on the torch that will be used in the relay around Greece.

It will be held at the City of Olympia because it is the birthplace of the Ancient Olympic Games.

The Olympic Flame will be toured around Greece before handing over the Rio 2016 organizers on April 27.

The official Olympic Torch Relay is set to happen on May 3 starting in Brasilia, Brazil’s capital city then, it will be toured around the country for 95 days.

The Olympic Flame is expected to tour around 83 cities including Brazil’s 26 state capitals. The whole relay is expected to reach about 90 percent of the whole population of Brazil covering 20,000km by road and about 16,000km by air flying from the north and the mid-west.

According to the official website of the Olympic, there will be about 12,00 torchbearers that will carry the torch for about 200 meters each before passing to another.

It is set that the relay will be finished on August 5 for the Olympic cauldron will be lit at the opening ceremony of the Rio 2016 at the Maracanã Stadium.
