Philippine considers the aid of satellite technology.
To combat the stuffs that hampers the process of food production under the ground, the Department of Agriculture or abbreviated as DA is taking into consideration the use of satellite technology.
A micro-satellite was launched last March and is still waiting for deployment from the International Space Station.
As the technology awaits for its releasing, the Department of Agriculture opts to adapt the usage of the first Philippine-assembled micro-satellite.
One of the specified purpose of the micro-satellite, which is called Diwata-1, is leading the country towards better agricultural productivity.
The DA built partnership with the International Rice Research Institute in developing the latest invention to revive the so-called low-tech agriculture in the Philippines.
PRISM, Philippine Rice Information System, is the product of DA and IRRI’s partnership. It will be implemented until the year 2017.
The operational system made by the DA and IRRI’s partnership made the Philippines the first country in Southeast Asia to have such system. It is considered as a prime achievement for Ph.
Starting 2018, the DA will own, operate, and sustain the rice information in the country according to IRRI’s project leader for Prism, Alice Laborte.
Further, Laborte added that together with the existing systems in DA, it will assist and provide better techniques for food security at the country’s highest levels – national and regional.
Moreover, Prism’s project leader affirmed that there will be a center for all the operations, processes and maintenance of Prism.
The Prism unit will be set up by a DA-attached agency, the Philippine Rice Research Institute or more commonly known as PhilRice.
There would also be mobilization of resources, personnel, and infrastructure.
According to Calixto Protacio, PhilRice executive director, the operation system has been aiding on the monitoring of the production of rice.
Further, assistance in the prohibition of the effects of calamities, such as typhoon and El Niño, is also provided by Prism.
