He passed the licensure examination for teachers in 1992 also, he passed the civil service test that enables him to be employed in any public school or any government offices.

But, Tatay Alfredo was NOT given the opportunity to teach. Now, he lives as a scavenger in Manila. He can be seen looking for trash that can still be sold in recycling shops in the area. This is his living.

In an article in GMA News Online, a UP Manila history professor named Benjie Mangubat said that Tatay Alfredo was a janitor before in an elementary school. This is his way to send himself in college.

Having the qualifications needed to teach, he tried to apply in the school where he’s working at but was rejected. This is because of the theft charges given to him UNKNOWINGLY.

After five years, he tried to apply again in the same school but still, nothing happened. So, he gave up and let himself be contented on collecting and selling different scrap materials, usually from garbage along Taft avenue.

Tatay Alfredo Manuel was known to be still very sharp. People say that if you would ask him about the scientific name of any plant, he will surely answer that correctly.

Some people even call him a genius.

In an interview on the Professor Benjie Mangubat, he expressed his pity on what happened to Tatay Alfredo Manuel. To help the old man, he said that he wanted to write the life story of Tatay Alfredo for a competition.

If it wins, the reward would be a house and lot. The professor promises to give it to Tatay Alfredo.

  1. I’m just wondering why he doesn’t apply at another school. Clearly his old school is prejudiced against him. I speak as an Education graduate who had to try many schools before getting accepted.

  3. He’s truly amazing. A lot of students would have benefited from him..with his knowledge and wisdom, had he’d been given the chance… I hope d govt or (even someone who has the capability…) could still give him the opportunity to realize his dream in teaching a lot of youth inside the classroom. May God bless him.
