WalangPasok: Class Suspensions on September 30, 2024

Class suspensions were declared in various areas of Luzon on Monday, September 30, 2024, as Typhoon Julian (international name: Krathon) brought heavy rains and strong winds to northern parts of the country. Local government units decided to cancel classes at all levels for both public and private schools to ensure the safety of students and teachers.

Areas with Class Suspensions:

  • Batanes
  • Baguio City
  • Aparri, Cagayan
  • Benguet
  • San Fabian, Pangasinan
  • Ilocos Sur (elementary and secondary levels)

The list of affected areas may continue to expand depending on the movement and strength of Typhoon Julian, with some areas only suspending classes for specific educational levels, such as Ilocos Sur, which has limited its suspension to elementary and secondary students.

Typhoon Julian’s Current Status:

As of the 5 AM bulletin released by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), Typhoon Julian was last monitored 275 kilometers (km) east of Calayan, Cagayan. It is currently moving west-northwest at 20 kilometers per hour (kph).

The typhoon is packing maximum sustained winds of 120 kph near its center, with gustiness reaching up to 135 kph. PAGASA has warned residents in affected areas to prepare for heavy rainfall, particularly in mountainous regions, where flash floods and landslides are possible.

Weather Advisories:

PAGASA has raised Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 2 over parts of Cagayan and the Babuyan Islands, which means moderate to heavy damage may be expected in areas within the storm’s path. Coastal areas have also been advised to monitor the situation closely, as strong waves and storm surges could occur due to Julian’s intensity.

The state weather bureau continues to advise the public to stay informed about the latest weather updates and heed the warnings from local disaster risk reduction and management offices. Authorities also remind everyone to avoid unnecessary travel, especially in flood-prone areas.

As Typhoon Julian continues to affect northern Luzon, staying safe and taking precautions is important. Follow official advisories and ensure you are prepared for any additional weather-related disruptions.
