#WalangPasok: January 9, 2024, Special Non-Working Holiday in Manila

Malacañang has declared January 9, 2024, a special non-working holiday in the City of Manila to commemorate the Feast of the Black Nazarene. This announcement was made on Friday, through Proclamation No. 766, which was signed by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin, under the authority of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

Feast of Black Nazarene

The Feast of the Black Nazarene is an annual religious event in Manila that draws millions of devotees. It is observed with grand processions, fervent prayers, and acts of devotion in honor of the image of Jesus Nazareno, believed to have miraculous powers. The celebration begins on December 31 with the Walk of Thanksgiving, which leads up to the feast day on January 9.

On this day, a key event is the Traslacion, the procession of the Black Nazarene, which travels from the Quirino Grandstand to Quiapo Church. The image of the Black Nazarene believed to be over 400 years old, is carried by devotees through the streets of Manila in a show of faith and devotion. The procession is one of the most well-attended religious events in the Philippines, with millions of Catholics participating each year in hopes of receiving blessings or miracles.

To ensure the smooth flow of traffic and maintain safety during the event, at least 13,000 uniformed personnel will be deployed in and around the vicinity of Quiapo Church. This includes 500 officers from the Manila Police District who will help manage the large crowds expected to gather. The declaration of a special holiday aims to facilitate the orderly conduct of religious activities while minimizing disruptions to daily life.

Public and private offices, schools, and businesses in Manila will be closed on January 9, allowing both devotees and non-devotees alike to observe the religious occasion. However, establishments offering essential services may remain open during the day.

The Feast of the Black Nazarene is not only an important religious observance for the Catholic faithful but also an event that highlights Filipino culture and devotion. With a large number of people participating each year, the feast stands as a significant moment in the spiritual calendar of Manila.
