MANILA, Philippines – As the first week of 2026 unfolds, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has issued a comprehensive weather forecast highlighting three major weather systems currently dictating conditions across the archipelago.

A Shear Line, the Northeast Monsoon (Amihan), and the Easterlies are simultaneously affecting different regions, bringing a mix of scattered rains, cool winds, and potential hazards to several provinces.
Regional Weather Breakdown
1. Visayas and Southern Luzon: Shear Line Hazards
The Shear Line—the convergence of warm and cold air—is currently the primary weather driver for the Visayas, Palawan, Catanduanes, Albay, Sorsogon, Masbate, and Romblon. Residents in these areas should prepare for:
- Condition: Cloudy skies with scattered rains and isolated thunderstorms.
- Warning: PAGASA warns of possible flash floods or landslides due to moderate to occasionally heavy rainfall.
2. Northern and Central Luzon: The Amihan Chill
The Northeast Monsoon continues to prevail over the rest of Luzon, bringing the characteristic cool January air.
- Cagayan Valley, Aurora, Quezon, Marinduque, Oriental Mindoro, and the rest of Bicol: Expect cloudy skies with rains. Moderate rainfall in these areas could also trigger landslides.
- Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon: Generally cloudy skies with light rains. Fortunately, no significant impact is expected in these regions.
3. Mindanao: Easterlies and Thunderstorms
The Easterlies—warm winds coming from the Pacific—are influencing the southern part of the country.
- Caraga Region: Will experience cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms.
- Rest of Mindanao: Partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers. While less frequent, severe thunderstorms may still cause localized flooding.
Marine and Coastal Conditions
Coastal activities and sea travel remain risky in several sectors due to strong winds.
| Area | Wind Speed | Sea Condition | Wave Height |
| Eastern Central & Southern Luzon, Visayas | Strong to Gale | Rough to Very Rough | 2.8 to 4.5m |
| Rest of Luzon and Visayas | Moderate to Strong | Moderate to Rough | 2.1 to 4.0m |
| Mindanao | Light to Moderate | Slight to Moderate | 0.6 to 2.5m |
