The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) has issued a weather forecast for August 31, 2024, highlighting the influence of a Low-Pressure Area (LPA) and the Southwest Monsoon on the country’s weather.
Weather Synopsis
As of 3:00 AM today, the LPA was located approximately 695 kilometers east of Butuan City, Agusan del Norte, with coordinates at 8.5°N, 131.8°E. Meanwhile, the Southwest Monsoon affects the western sections of Southern Luzon and the Visayas, contributing to the overall rainy weather in several regions.
Forecast Weather Conditions
The regions of Caraga, Davao, Northern Mindanao, SOCCSKSARGEN, Central Visayas, Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao, Leyte, Southern Leyte, and Eastern Samar will experience cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms due to the LPA. These conditions may lead to possible flash floods or landslides in areas receiving moderate to heavy rains.
Palawan and the rest of Mindanao will also see cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms, this time caused by the Southwest Monsoon. Similar to the aforementioned areas, these regions are at risk of flash floods or landslides due to moderate to at times heavy rainfall.
Western Visayas, the Negros Island Region, and Occidental Mindoro are expected to have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms, also as a result of the Southwest Monsoon. Severe thunderstorms in these areas could potentially trigger flash floods or landslides.
Metro Manila and the rest of the country will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms, mainly due to localized thunderstorms. Despite being isolated, severe thunderstorms could still lead to flash floods or landslides.
Forecast Wind and Coastal Water Conditions
Across Luzon and Visayas, winds will be light to moderate, coming from the southwest to the south, with coastal waters expected to be slight to moderate, ranging from 0.6 to 2.1 meters in height.
In Mindanao, winds will also be light to moderate, but from the southwest to the west, with coastal waters similarly slight to moderate, measuring 0.6 to 2.1 meters.
