PAGASA Releases Latest Heavy Rainfall Outlook Due to Shear Line

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has issued a weather advisory indicating that a shear line is expected to bring significant rainfall to various regions from today until Monday, February 10.

Pagasa Rainfall Warning

Forecasted Rainfall:

Today until tomorrow noon (February 8):

  • Heavy to Intense Rainfall (100-200 mm): Catanduanes, Albay, Camarines Sur, Sorsogon, and Northern Samar.
  • Moderate to Heavy Rainfall (50-100 mm): Quezon, Camarines Norte, Masbate, Palawan, Occidental Mindoro, Oriental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Capiz, Aklan, Eastern Samar, and Samar.

Tomorrow noon to Sunday noon (February 9):

  • Heavy to Intense Rainfall (100-200 mm): Quezon and Camarines Norte.
  • Moderate to Heavy Rainfall (50-100 mm): Bulacan, Rizal, Laguna, Marinduque, Oriental Mindoro, and Camarines Sur.

Sunday noon to Monday noon (February 10):

  • Moderate to Heavy Rainfall (50-100 mm): Quezon and Camarines Norte.

PAGASA warns that actual rainfall may be higher in mountainous and elevated areas. Additionally, the impact in some regions could be exacerbated by significant antecedent rainfall.

Advisories and Precautions:

Residents and local disaster risk reduction and management offices are advised to take all necessary measures to protect life and property. PAGASA’s Regional Services Divisions may issue Heavy Rainfall Warnings, Rainfall/Thunderstorm Advisories, and other severe weather information specific to their areas as appropriate.

The public is reminded of the distinction between a Heavy Rainfall Warning and a Weather Advisory:

  • Heavy Rainfall Warning: Provides forecasts for the next three hours and applies up to the municipal level. It is more precise, utilizing Doppler radar technology to track real-time rainfall intensity, making it highly effective for immediate decision-making in flood-prone areas.
  • Weather Advisory: Covers 24 hours but is issued only at the provincial level. It offers a broader outlook on potential weather disturbances but lacks the short-term accuracy of Heavy Rainfall Warnings.

Given that a Weather Advisory is based on a 24-hour outlook, it should not be used as a basis for class suspensions or other official decisions.

PAGASA will issue the next Weather Advisory at 5:00 PM today unless significant changes occur.

Severe Weather Alerts:

Several regions have been placed under Severe General Flood Advisories due to the anticipated heavy rainfall. Residents in these areas are urged to remain vigilant and monitor local news for updates.
