DOJ is mulling to file perjury against Kerwin Espinosa after he retracted his affidavit against Leila de Lima
KERWIN ESPINOSA – The self-confessed drug lord might face perjury after retracting his affidavit against Sen. Leila de Lima.
Leila Norma Eulalia Josefa Magistrado de Lima, a politician, lawyer, human rights activist, and law professor is currently serving as senator of the Philippines since 2016.
Previously, she held the positions of Chairperson of the Commission on Human Rights from May 2008 to June 2010, and as the Secretary of Justice from 2010 to 2015 under the administration of late president Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III.
In 2017, she was arrested for her alleged link to the drug trade at the New Bilibid Prison during her term as the Justice secretary.
Presently, she is running for the senate again under the slate of presidential candidate, Vice President Leni Robredo.
But earlier, self-confessed drug lord Kerwin Espinosa recanted his claims against de Lima.
According to him, he was only forced to testify against de Lima.
Meanwhile, the Department of Justice is mulling filing a perjury case against Espinosa for recanting his affidavit against de Lima.
“Tinitingnan ‘yan ngayon ng ating Office of Prosecutor General, kung puwede ngang makasuhan [ng perjury], kasi nga magkaiba ‘yung kaniyang naging statement,” said DOJ Undersecretary Adrian Sugay.
Sugay added that the affidavit of Espinosa which put De Lima behind bars for more than five years already was taken “under oath.”
Senatorial candidate Leila de Lima has yet to issue an official statement regarding Kerwin’s decision to recant his statement against her.
But her camp is willing to file charges against people who forced Espinosa.
