3,000 people died and 400,000 lost their homes when a strong quake hit San Francisco, California on April 18, 1906. The quake lasted for 45 to 60 seconds which was a result of the shifting of the San Andreas fault. This disaster is considered the most damaging natural disaster in the history of the United States.
On May 22, 1960, Valdivia, Chile experienced the most powerful quake ever recorded with magnitude 9.5. Two million people lost their houses while 3,000 were injured and 1,665 died.
