3,000 people died and 400,000 lost their homes when a strong quake hit San Francisco, California on April 18, 1906. On May 22, 1960, Valdivia, Chile experienced the most powerful quake ever recorded with magnitude 9.5. Two million people lost their houses while 3,000 were injured and 1,665 died.
