The Bishops of the four dioceses of the Catholic Church in the Negros Island Region called for an end of mounting cases of EJKs which is leading to a “culture of death”.

The Bishops of the four dioceses of the Catholic Church in the Negros Island Region could not watch in silence as the cases of extrajudicial killings in the country are mounting.

In a joint pastoral statement issued by the four Bishops, they called for an end to EJKs in the country, which they believe would lead to a “culture of death”.

The joint statement was signed by Bacolod Bishop Patricio Buzon, San Carlos Bishop Gerardo Alminaza, Dumaguete Bishop Julito Cortes and Fr. Rolando Nueva, the administrator of the Diocese of Kabankalan.

The statement said: “While we commend he government for its political will and determination in addressing the terrible drug menace that has long plagued our country, we strongly urge that this be done within the bounds of law with full respect for human rights”.

Last week, the Diocese of Bacolod, led by Bishop Buzon and Fr. Felix Pasquin, gathered in front of the San Sebastian Cathedral to mark the Feast of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary. The prayer vigil was held for the conversion of drug lords, pushers and users, and to express their concern of the increasing number of deaths because of the anti-drug war.
