Around 12,000 Koreans rally to call for the resignation of President Park Geun-hye.
SEOUL, South Korea – An approximately 12,000 strong Koreans rallied in Seoul to demand for the resignation of President Park Geun-hye.
On Friday, President Park Geun-hye ordered the resignation of ten of her senior secretaries as political turmoil continued to put pressure in the country.
The senior secretaries serve as aides who coordinate policy between the presidency and government ministries.
Those who were ordered to resign were senior secretaries to the president for policy coordination, political affairs, civil affairs, foreign affairs and national security, public relations, economic affairs, future strategy, education and culture, employment and welfare and personnel affairs.
Park’s spokesperson, Jung Youn-kuk, said, “The President will carry out reshuffling the Office of the President in the near future”.
The Koreans accuse their president of leaking state documents to a friend and the said scandal which erupted last week gripped President Park and her office.
On Tuesday, President Park admitted sharing state documents with Choi Soon-sil, who also offered “her personal opinion” on the speeches Park made before the presidential election in 2012.
In a televised apology, President Park said that Choi, who does not hold any office, looked at “some documents” for a certain period of time after Park took office but did not specify what they were.
“I am shocked and my heart is breaking for causing public concern”, President Park said. “I’ve done so (shared the documents) out of pure heart so that I could carefully review (the documents)”.
Because of the scandal, the Koreans hit Park in approval ratings, which plunged to a record low of 21.1 percent on Thursday.
But despite of the accusations against her, Park is immune from any criminal prosecution except for insurrection or treason, as a sitting president.
