The MIAA announced on Monday that the OFWs will no longer be required to pay P550 airport terminal fee when they buy tickets.
The Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) will no longer be required to pay the P550 airport terminal fee when they leave for work abroad starting March of 2017.
The Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) announced in a news conference on Monday, November 28, that their office is working on the technical details and coordinating with international airline companies to free the OFWs from the airport terminal fee.
The terminal fee is imposed by the previous management of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) on OFWs since February 2015, according to MIAA General Manager Ed Monreal.
The payment of the P550 airport terminal fee are being required to OFWs when they buy tickets via online or in airline ticket outlets.
The OFWs can claim their refund upon departure at the airport terminals but because of haste or time constraints, oftentimes they are not able to get their refund.
To prove, records show that more than a billion pesos are collected out of airport terminal fees and 50 percent of which remains unclaimed. The amount becomes a part of the general fund of the NAIA.
According to Monreal, the MIAA is ready to refund the fees to overseas workers as long as they can present the E-ticket, boarding pass and passport they used. Monreal guaranteed that they can refund even if the documentary requirements were used several years ago.
Meanwhile, the MIAA, along with the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP), assured that the air congestion will be greatly reduced in the first three months of next year because the agencies are preparing projects for more efficient management of the air traffic.
