VP Robredo off to her first official travel abroad as vice-president.
Vice-President Leonor ‘Leni’ Robredo is set to receive an award in Thailand as “Honorary Outstanding Woman in 2016”. This is Leni’s first official travel as Philippine vice president outside of the country.
The event is spearheaded by the National Council of Women (NCWT), Ministry of Social Development and Human Security, Ministry of Interior and Ministry of Education Thailand, for the Thai Women Day’s event with a theme, “The Power of Thai Women under the Greatest Kindness of her Majesty the Queen, the Mother of the Land”.
In a press statement issued by the Office of the Vice President, Robredo is chosen as one of the awardees because of her dedication to the welfare of women and making their lives better, women’s rights, gender equality and others.
“According to the official invite, VP Robredo will be honored for her dedication for women in her country to improve women’s rights and gender equality including overcoming barriers to be a successful ASEAN woman leader”, the statement from the VP Office said.
Since 2003, Thailand celebrates every first day of August each year in dedication to Queen Sirikit. August is the queen’s birth month for she was born on August 12, 1932.
Sirikit Kitiyakara, is the queen consort of Bhumibol Adulyadej, King (Rame IX) of Thailand. Bhumibol Adulyadej, King (Rama IX) of Thailand. She met Bhumibol in Paris, where her father was the Thai ambassador. They married in 1950, shortly before Bhumibol’s coronation. Sirikit was appointed Queen Regent in 1956. Sirikit has one son and three daughters for the King. As the consort of the king who is the world’s longest-reigning head of state, she is also the world’s longest-serving consort of a monarch. Sirikit suffered a stroke on 21 July 2012 and has since refrained from public appearances.
