Chocolate Can Make You Smarter
Chocolate has been loved by millions of people all over the world. That is because of the distinct taste it gives and can be paired on almost all desserts.
But, did you know that a new study suggests that moderate consumption of chocolates can make someone smarter?
The recent research was published in the journal, Appetite , a part of a 40-year study. It says that “people who eat chocolate at least once a week saw their memory and abstract thinking improved,” as quoted in an article from Evening Standard.
A psychologist named Merrill Elias started tracking the cognitive capabilities of more or less 1,000 people in New York since the 1970s. The goal of the tracking is to “observe the relationship between people’s blo0d pressure and brain performance.”
Elias didn’t expect that her study ended up discoveries about chocolate.
The said research was done with “seven waves”, for every 5 years. Then, an interesting pattern came out.
“We found that people who eat chocolate at least once a week tend to perform better cognitively,” says Elias. “It’s significant – it touches a number of cognitive domains,” she added.
Elias and her team have found that the “visual-spatial memory and [organization], working memory, scanning and tracking, abstract reasoning and the mini-mental state examination” became better.
Another analysis made by a nutrition researcher named Georgina Crichton of the University of South Australia said that the moderate consumption of chocolates can affect everyday work like “remembering a phone number, or your shopping list, or being able to do two things at once, like talking and driving at the same time”.
Now, eating chocolate for most people is okay. But, please see a doctor first for you to be sure.
